Welcome to KS1

At the start of Year 1, we support our children to settle quickly into their new classrooms by aiming to provide a bridge between the style of learning, organisation and layout of the EYFS classroom and the expectations for Year 1. Our children must feel secure and aware of the new boundaries in order for their best learning to happen. The classroom layout will reflect the learning from the EYFS with (managed) continuous provision. Learning in Year 1 is very hands on with lots of opportunity to ‘have a go’ and talk about what is happening.

Staff will support children to understand the new daily routine of assembly, playtime, phonics, lunchtime etc. Focus activities will be provided for children in order to assess and move on their learning. Timetabling will be run as morning and afternoon sessions in order to ensure all children have opportunities to use all the continuous provision as well as take part in the focused learning task.

In Year 2, learning in literacy and numeracy is more formal with whole class teaching and working approach. We continue to teach our pupils the skills they need to be good independent learners. We build on their strengths and support them in the areas they need to develop, always focussing on the positive and giving encouragement through praise and reward for good efforts. Emphasis is put on practical experience with lots of opportunities to talk to each other about their learning and challenging children to push themselves further.

Throughout the Key Stage we continue to nurture and support the children in their learning experience and personal development.
